When a woman has multiple ovulation, the eggs released by the ovaries can be fertilised by different sperm. For this reason, multiple ovulation leads to a higher probability of multiple pregnancy.
In assisted reproduction treatments, patients are given medication to stimulate egg production to ensure higher success rates. Therefore, in these situations there is also an increased risk of twin pregnancy.
In the case of ovarian stimulation for artificial insemination (AI) it is much gentler than for IVF, as only one or two ovarian follicles are intended to develop.
