Although some patients wish to have a multiple pregnancy through assisted reproduction, this type of gestation presents certain disadvantages and risks for the pregnant woman and for the babies. Multiple pregnancy increases the risk of:
- Preeclampsia.
- Gestational diabetes.
- Spontaneous abortion.
- Intrauterine growth retardation.
- Premature delivery.
- Cesarean delivery.
- Low birth weight.
- Congenital anomalies.
- Perinatal mortality.
This is the reason why, at present, the tendency is to transfer a single embryo in in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles.
