Risks of getting pregnant with multiples

In the past few years, the majority of twins we see have been conceived using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs). However, infertility specialists bet on diminishing multiple pregnancy rates due to all the risks associated.

On the one hand, the main risks for the mother are pregnancy complications, including a greater risk of C-section, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, etc., especially in women of advanced maternal age.

On the other hand, the babies usually are born before week 40, which means that they are born prematurely, and with a birth that is below the normal range. Moreover, the risk of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, birth defects, or perinatal morality is higher.
