Ovulation: the release of the ovum from the ovary

Ovulation is defined as the rupture of the ovarian follicle and the exit of the egg from the ovary for fertilization. Thus, the egg passes into the fallopian tubes, where it will remain for about 24 hours waiting to be fertilized.

The ovulation phase of the menstrual cycle is therefore the woman's most fertile period. If the egg released after ovulation is not fertilized, it will degrade and then menstruation will occur.
