The menstrual cycle consists of several phases: menstruation, proliferative phase, secretory or luteal phase and ischemic phase. This last phase of the menstrual cycle is when the corpus luteum disappears and the amount of estrogen and progesterone decreases.
As the levels of these sex hormones decrease, the endometrium sheds and menstruation begins again. This ischemic phase would not occur if fertilization of the ovum were to occur.
