The exact cause that leads to placental abruption is unknown, although there are some factors that increase the risk of this gestational complication occurring:
- Arterial hypertension.
- Presence of uterine fibroids.
- Placental abruption in previous pregnancies.
- Uterine infection.
- Maternal age over 40 years.
In addition, smoking or other drug use is also a risk factor for placental abruption before delivery.
