Women over the age of 40 who are looking for a natural pregnancy and are unable to achieve it, should see a fertility specialist. After performing various medical tests, the specialist will determine which reproductive option is the best.
If the woman wishes to try an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycle with her own eggs, it is recommended that she also undergo pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). In this way, the embryos obtained genetically will be analysed in order to transfer only the healthy embryos and, therefore, those that are likely to implant and give rise to a pregnancy. On the other hand, genetically altered embryos will be rejected.
If this fertility treatment does not work, the alternative would be to undergo IVF with ovodonation. However, this option involves giving up the woman's genetic load, which causes considerable stress for some patients.
