In addition to preserving eggs, women undergoing cancer treatment can also cryopreserve embryos. In this case, it is important to bear in mind that a semen sample will be needed, either from a male partner or from a sperm donor. This semen sample will be used to fertilise the eggs, previously extracted from the woman by means of an ovarian puncture.
Once fertilisation has taken place, the embryos are cultured in the laboratory and vitrified. In this way, the embryos can be cryopreserved indefinitely until the woman can make use of them.
