Changes in the cervix during the menstrual cycle

The position and consistency of the cervix undergo certain changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Learning to identify these changes allows a woman to detect the ovulatory period and, therefore, the most fertile days of her menstrual cycle.

In the pre- and post-ovulatory period, the cervix is closed, firm, dry, and low (easier to reach on palpation).

However, in the period close to ovulation, the cervix opens and is softer and higher.
