Non-invasive prenatal diagnostic tests, such as combined first-trimester screening, are not really diagnostic techniques, but allow a risk or likelihood of the fetus having a specific genetic alteration to be obtained.
This result is obtained by combining factors from the mother, such as age and weight, with the nuchal translucency of the fetus and the values of the hormones hCG and PAPP-A.
If this probability is high, an invasive technique will be used to obtain a more accurate diagnosis.
