Vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of the perivaginal muscles. The main consequence of this is difficulty in penetration during sexual intercourse, which makes it painful.
The causes of vaginismus are diverse and include physiological reasons. These factors are the least frequent, but some stand out, such as those shown in the image:
- Miscarriages.
- Lowering of oestrogen levels.
- Inflammation of the Bartholin's glands.
In addition, tumours in the pelvis, a stiff hymen and traumatic childbirth can also be physical causes of vaginismus.
