To this day, the exact cause of placenta previa during pregnancy is unknown. However, there are several factors that increase the likelihood of this gestational complication. Some of these include:
- Uterine malformations
- Multiple pregnancy
- Previous pregnancies
- Prior cesarean delivery
- Uterine scarring caused by miscarriages
- Advanced maternal age
The incidence of placenta previa is 1 in every 200 pregnant women, and it typically occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy.
