Amniocentesis is an invasive prenatal test typically recommended for older women. The older the woman, the greater the chance of her baby having a birth defect.
Furthermore, if there is a history of miscarriages or previous pregnancies with chromosomal abnormalities, this test should also be indicated.
Finally, when the triple screening at weeks 10-12 of pregnancy yields abnormal results, the specialist will recommend amniocentesis to confirm or rule out these results.
