In a normal pregnancy, the embryo implants in the uterus. However, sometimes the embryo implants elsewhere, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. When this happens, it is known as an ectopic or extrauterine pregnancy.
In addition to the fallopian tube, there are other types of ectopic pregnancy, such as isthmic ectopic pregnancy, when the embryo implants towards the end of the tube, or ovarian ectopic pregnancy, if the embryo implants in the ovary, for example.
