Although essential thrombocythemia is not aggravated during pregnancy, it is possible that this alteration in the number of platelets may cause gestational complications.
Some of the complications in pregnancy that are related to essential thrombocythemia are the following:
- Increased risk of miscarriage.
- Possibility of fetal growth retardation.
- Placental abruption.
In the most severe cases of essential thrombocythemia, intrauterine fetal death may occur. However, this is not common.
