Freezing large amounts of ovarian tissue requires a biopsy and removal of some of the tissue containing the egg precursor cells. The removed tissue is processed in the laboratory and frozen in liquid nitrogen. This method is recommended for pre-pubertal girls who have been diagnosed with cancer. Therefore, once the cancer is confirmed to be gone, the frozen ovarian tissue is self-transplanted into the woman's ovary.
