Follicular recruitment and selection in the ovary

Of all the follicles that had begun to mature in the ovary, only one will become a preovulatory follicle or Graaf's follicle as a result of the variation in FSH levels.

Then, when the LH peak occurs around day 14 of the menstrual cycle, ovulation takes place. The egg containing the developed follicle is expelled into the fallopian tube awaiting fertilization by a sperm. In addition, the remains of the ovulatory follicle will form the corpus luteum in the ovary.
