Can egg donation cause early menopause?

    Hello there,

I want to become an egg donor, but before applying to become so, I’d like to be totally sure that my menopause won’t start earlier because of that. I’ve heard many times that it may be a consequence of egg donation, but I don’t know why and how true is it.

    Any help?

  2. Dear Megan,

each woman has a certain amount of eggs (ovarian reserve) from the moment they are born, which will determine the age at which she her menopause will start. That amount won’t change because of ovarian stimulation, either for egg donation or any other fertility treatment that may become necessary to achieve pregnancy.

During the egg donation process, donors can restore the eggs contained within all the primordial follicles that are generated in a normal menstrual cycle, which would degenerate if the cycle wasn’t stimulated and continued its natural pathway. For this reason, neither your ovarian reserve nor menopause will be affected by egg donation.

I hope I have been able to help,
