The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease, an autoimmune and hereditary disorder that causes stimulation of the thyroid gland.
However, this pathology is not the only reason why hyperthyroidism can develop. Other possible causes of excess thyroid hormones in the body are the presence of overactive thyroid nodules, inflammation of the thyroid, high intake of iodine-rich foods, genetic factors and pregnancy.
