Normally, a single egg is released during the ovulation phase of a woman's menstrual cycle. In addition, the ovaries alternate in releasing the mature egg.
However, there is a small percentage of women who have multiple ovulations, that is, they are able to release two eggs in the same menstrual cycle. In these cases, each ovary releases one egg and, therefore, fertilization of both eggs can take place. This fact explains the births of twins.
