Alteration of folliculogenesis in PCOS

One of the possible causes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the dysfunction of folliculogenesis, that is, of the process of development and maturation of the ovarian follicles. Women with PCOS have double or triple the follicular development compared to women who do not suffer from this endocrine disorder.

It is postulated that this exaggerated growth of ovarian follicles is due to the fact that, because the estrogen concentration is so high, ovulation does not occur and the ovarian follicles remain atretic in the ovary. Therefore, one of the main characteristics of PCOS is the presence of multiple ovarian cysts.
