Sexual transmission of HIV and assisted reproduction

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can be transmitted sexually, through blood and through vertical transmission from mother to child.

Therefore, when a couple is serodiscordant, that is, only one partner is a carrier of the virus, it may be advisable to resort to assisted reproduction to achieve a pregnancy, reducing the risk of infecting the other partner. If the male partner is HIV-positive, sperm washing can be performed.
