TESE stands for testicular sperm extraction (from the English name Testicular Sperm Extraction). This procedure is used in reproductive medicine for men diagnosed with azoospermia, i.e., the absence of sperm in the ejaculate. However, spermatogenesis (sperm production) is not altered.

Sperm recovered directly from the testicle will be used to fertilize the eggs in the laboratory, and the embryo will then be transferred to the woman's uterus.
