Methotrexate is a drug that can be used in the treatment of ectopic pregnancy, since it stops the advancement of pregnancy. However, methotrexate is usually only used when a series of circumstances exist:
- Patient with no or mild symptoms.
- hCG less than 3000-5000 mIU/ml, although it can be used with higher values.
- No fetal heart activity.
- Diameter of the gestational sac less than 4cm.
However, there are times when hCG levels do not drop as expected after methotrexate treatment, so surgery may be necessary.
