What is unicornuate uterus?
Unicornuate uterus is an abnormal type of uterus caused by an alteration in the development of the Müllerian ducts. As a result, a smaller uterus with a curved shape arises.
This uterine malformation is present in 20% of women and there are variants:
- No rudimentary horn.
- With functioning and communicating rudimentary horn.
- With functioning rudimentary horn and not communicating.
- With non-functioning rudimentary horn.
This type of uterus does not cause total female infertility, although complications may arise during pregnancy. In these cases the rate of ectopic pregnancy, premature delivery and the need for cesarean section increases.
