Perimenopause, or premenopause, is the stage leading up to menopause—a transitional period marking the end of a woman’s reproductive life. Generally, perimenopause begins around age 45, and women will experience irregularities in their menstrual cycle. However, as long as ovulation is occurring, it is possible to conceive naturally, although the likelihood of pregnancy is low due to the depletion of the ovarian reserve and poor egg quality.
For these reasons, women in the perimenopausal stage who wish to become mothers are advised to visit a fertility clinic and undergo IVF with egg donation.
