Amniocentesis is an invasive prenatal test, and as such, there may be some risks associated with the technique itself. However, the risk of miscarriage after this amniotic fluid test is less than 1%.
In any case, some of the possible risks associated with amniocentesis include:
- Loss of amniotic fluid.
- Puncture of the fetus during the procedure.
- Transmission of diseases such as HIV from mother to fetus.
- Irritation at the puncture site.
- The development of uterine infections.
