The endometrium is the mucous layer that lines the uterus internally. It consists of a highly vascularized layer and its main function is to receive and house the embryo at the blastocyst stage, a phenomenon known as implantation.
In addition to the endometrium, the uterus has two other layers in its structure: the myometrium, which is formed mainly by muscular tissue, and the perimetrium, which is the membrane that covers the uterus on the outside.
