Unlike hyperthyroidism, in hypothyroidism there is a deficit in the production of thyroid hormones. The main cause of this alteration of the thyroid gland is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, but hypothyroidism can also be caused by:
- Removal of the thyroid gland, either totally or partially.
- Radioactive therapies used as cancer treatment.
- Diet low in iodine.
- The administration of certain drugs such as amiodarone.
