Male infertility can have several causes. Among the genetic causes of male fertility problems are microdeletions of the Y chromosome.
These are small losses of genetic material in a region known as AZF (azoospermia factor) of the Y chromosome, which causes serious alterations in the process of spermatogenesis, that is, in the production of spermatozoa. Therefore, males with microdeletions in the Y chromosome may have azoospermia or oligospermia.
