Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a disorder characterized by the presence of inflammatory processes caused by infections in the female reproductive system. Usually there is infection in the uterus and ovaries, but it can also occur in other reproductive organs. Any PID will cause scarring, which is associated with infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
Some factors that increase the risk of developing PID are unprotected sexual intercourse, multiple partners and sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea.
