Hyperprolactinemia is a hormonal disorder characterized by elevated prolactin levels in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland and whose main function is the production of breast milk. However, this hormone is also involved in the production and regulation of other sex hormones.
For this reason, when prolactin levels are elevated in men, the production of FSH and LH hormones is reduced. This decrease in FSH and LH leads to impaired spermatogenesis or sperm production.
In addition, hyperprolactinemia can cause erectile dysfunction in men, loss of sexual desire and/or a low concentration of sperm in the semen. All this would has negative effect on achieving pregnancy.
