Mechanism of action of metformin

Metformin is a medicine that lowers glucose levels, but does not affect insulin secretion. It is therefore a hypoglycaemic and insulin-sensitising drug.

To perform its function, metformin:

  • Reduces glucose production in the liver.
  • Increases insulin receptors in muscle.
  • Delays glucose absorption in the intestine.
