Although most ectopic pregnancies develop in the fallopian tubes, there are other areas where the embryo can implant. Depending on where it is located, the medical approach will be as follows:
[Image/Diagram showing non-tubal ectopic pregnancy locations]- In the ovary: as long as the situation permits, laparoscopic surgery will be chosen with the primary intention of saving the ovary.
- In the abdominal cavity: the usual procedure is to perform a laparotomy (open surgery). In addition, in these cases, the patient may need to receive methotrexate after the intervention.
- At the cervical, cornual, or interstitial level: It is highly recommended to try pharmacological treatment (methotrexate) first to attempt to avoid surgery. The main reason is that the surgical option in these areas carries a high risk of ending in a hysterectomy (the complete removal of the uterus).
