An ectopic pregnancy is a type of pregnancy in which the embryo attaches outside the uterus (womb). When this occurs, it is not possible for the embryo to develop into a baby. Medical assistance is required as soon as possible to avoid severe complications in the pregnant woman.
Commonly, ectopic pregnancies occur in the Fallopian tubes, and for this reason they are also known as tubal pregnancies. It can take place in other places of the female reproductive tract as well, such as the ovary, cervix, myometrium, or abdominal cavity.
