Risk factors for pregnancy outside the womb

Ectopic pregnancy is the implantation of the embryo outside the uterus, either in the fallopian tubes, ovaries or any other extrauterine location. This type of pregnancy is caused by a blockage or delay in the movement of the fertilised egg through the fallopian tube. However, there are certain factors that increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Some of these factors are listed below:

  • Endometriosis or the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
  • Salpingitis, i.e. inflammation of the fallopian tubes.
  • Maternal age.
  • Previous extrauterine or ectopic pregnancy.
  • smoking
  • Tubal reversal.
