Steroid hormones, such as androgens and estrogens, come from cholesterol. In the first phase, cholesterol gives rise to androgens, which are then converted into oestrogens by the action of the enzyme aromatase.
Estrogens are synthesized mainly in the adrenal glands and ovaries of women. Therefore, they are also known as female sex hormones, responsible for the sexual maturation of women and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in puberty.
