GnRH antagonists are used in assisted reproduction to control the ovarian cycle. Their function is to stop ovulation, which would cause cancellation of the cycle.
Ovarian function is controlled through suppression of pituitary activity. The hormonal cascade responsible for controlling the ovarian cycle and thus causing ovulation under physiological conditions is inhibited.
