When hCG hormone is used in assisted reproductive techniques, its benefits and drawbacks must be taken into account.
One of the main advantages is that hCG hormone, because of its biological similarity to the LH hormone, triggers ovulation in women. In addition, hCG supports the luteal phase by keeping the corpus luteum active to secrete progesterone.
On the other hand, the main drawback of hCG is that it can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) if the woman experiences an exaggerated response to ovarian stimulation.
