The Spanish legislation as it is contemplated in the Law 14/2006 on Assisted Human Reproduction Techniques allows 4 possible destinations for those embryos that are left over after an IVF cycle.
Patients can make use of their embryos in the future if they decide to cryopreserve them. Alternatively, they can donate the leftover embryos to other patients or to science.
The last option would be to destroy the surplus embryos. However, this option can only be done if the patient has reached the end of her reproductive years.
