Although ovarian stimulation for fertility treatment such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is usually quite controlled, sometimes a complication called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can occur. This is an excessive response of the ovaries to the hormone medication administered.
In these cases, there are several approaches. One is to reduce the doses of gonadotrophins, especially in women at higher risk of developing OHSS such as young patients under 35 years of age, women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or women with a low body mass index.
